Shreyas Iyer IPL Journey: From Ball Boy to the Big League

Shreyas Iyer IPL journey is nothing short of a fairytale. Born and raised in Mumbai, cricket was always in his veins. In 2008, during the first-ever IPL season, a young Iyer was a ball boy, watching the game from the boundary lines. He dreamed of one day playing on that very field. Little did he know, that dream would soon turn into reality.

Making a Mark in Domestic Cricket

Iyer’s aggressive stroke play and consistency made him a standout player in Mumbai’s domestic circuit. His breakthrough came in the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy, where he scored 1,321 runs, making him one of the top scorers of the season. This outstanding performance caught IPL scouts’ attention. In 2015, Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) bought him for ₹2.6 crore. He did not disappoint—his 439 runs in his debut IPL season earned him the Emerging Player of the Year award.

The Rise to Leadership – Delhi Capitals Era

Iyer’s performances kept improving. In 2018, he became the captain of Delhi Capitals, replacing Gautam Gambhir mid-season. Under his leadership:

  • 2019: Led DC to their first IPL playoff appearance in seven years.
  • 2020: Took DC to their first-ever IPL final, scoring 519 runs that season.

Iyer had proven himself as a dependable leader. But cricket had more challenges in store for him.

Injuries & Setbacks – The Toughest Phase

Just as his career peaked, a shoulder injury in early 2021 forced him to miss the first half of IPL. In his absence, Delhi Capitals appointed Rishabh Pant as their captain. Though Iyer returned later that season, DC chose to stick with Pant as their leader. This marked the end of Shreyas Iyer IPL journey with the franchise.

Shreyas Iyer IPL Journey with Punjab Kings: A New Chapte

In the 2022 mega auction, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) signed Iyer for ₹12.25 crore and made him captain. His first season had mixed results. Unfortunately, an injury in 2023 ruled him out completely, keeping him away for an entire IPL season.

Now, as IPL 2025 approaches, Iyer has taken on a new challenge by joining Punjab Kings (PBKS) as their captain. His leadership is expected to bring fresh energy to the team. He aims to secure their first-ever IPL title, making Shreyas Iyer IPL journey even more remarkable.
